China appoints Xi Jinping as president by reutersChina's new leader greets parliament after being formally elected on Thursday (March 14).

Xi Jinping is now China's president after taking over from Hu Jintao.

The 59-year-old received confirmation in a tightly scripted ceremony at the National People's Congress.

He was elected by almost 3,000 delegates and faced virtually no opposition.

It's the final seal of approval in a once-in-a-decade power transition.

Vice Premier Li Keqiang is set to succeed Premier Wen Jiabao in a similar vote on Friday (March 15).
